General Description of Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board (SLAAMB), the Area and Communities

The Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board was founded in November 1991 to address the employment and training needs in the geographical area. On April 1, 1999 SLAAMB became an Aboriginal Human Resources Development Agreement Holder (AHRDAH), which became responsible for the delivery of the Aboriginal Human Resources Development Strategy (AHRDS). Part of this responsibility included childcare in the Sioux Lookout Area.

The SLAAMB board members are representatives from the First Nations Council (5), Aboriginal organizations, local Native Women's Group, Local Indian Friendship Centre and one elder.

Sioux Lookout is located about 400 kilometers northwest of Thunder Bay, Ontario or 95 kilometers northeast of Dryden, Ontario. SLAAMB has 24 First Nations in its area with most of them being remote and located above the 51st parallel of Canada. Only 3 out of the 24 First Nations are accessible by road with the remaining 21 being remote, as they are only accessible by air. SLAAMB also represents six native organizations located in the town of Sioux Lookout. The Sioux Lookout area covers a vast region of over 200,000 square kilometers.
