Journeyman Carpenter from Bearskin Lake First Nation.

He learned his craft in 1980 from the carpenters of the day. He was taught to learn more on his own. He did not receive any formal carpentry training he says and he never worked with non-aboriginal carpenters, very little if at all.

Bruce has well over 15,000 hours of carpentry experience that he learned mainly working on reserve. Initially he came to the SLAAMB office looking for work, but after some convincing Bruce's determination saw him take the C of Q exam twice, after some tutoring and a few courses he challenged the exam a second time, he passed his C of Q exam. When he passed his C of Q exam, it made a lot of positive changes for Bruce, both for his pocket and his frame of mind. Now he works as a journeyman carpenter at the hostel site of the new hospital. Bruce is happy working at the large hospital worksite and enjoying the benefits of his interprovincial ticket and the company of many non-aboriginal carpenters and workers.
