HRSDC & SLAAMB Chiefs Political Group

Howard Green the Assistant Deputy Minister for Service Canada/Ontario Region and Craig Atkinson the Director for Regional Delivery HRSDC met with the SLAAMB Chiefs Political Group on Monday May 10, 2010.  Presentations were also made by officials from Wasaya Airways, Confederation College and the Menoyawin Health Center. 

Service Canada Update

The Deputy Minister's Awards of Excellence for Service Canada was recently held in Ottawa. Pictured in the attachment are June Trout, Amanda Kakekaspan and Harriet McKay of the Northwestern Region Sioux Lookout Office. They are also members of the Aboriginal Birth Registration Initiative Team. Each received an Award of Excellence from Assistant Deputy Minister Howard Green for their hard work and dedication. Also pictured is the Deputy Minister of Human Resources & Skills Development Mrs. Janice Charette.

SLAAMB Success Story!

My name is Celine Favell-Roulette and I am from Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation. I recently graduated from St. Lawrence College with my Early Childhood Education diploma. This program was funded by Equaywuk Women's Group and SLAAMB, and the program was delivered through distance education.

New Employment and Training Opportunities!

SLAAMB was successful in getting two (2) new proposals  approved by Human Resources Skills Development Canada (HRSDC). The two propoals are in partnerships with these AHRDAs - Shooniyaa Wa-Biitong (GCT# 3), U.O.I., O-GI, MNO and Mattawa First Nations Council.  These projects were approved to start September 28, 2009 and end March 31, 2011. Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Class Underway!

The final Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Class for the CAAR project is now underway. 12 participants from communities across the SLAAMB catchment area will be doing 11 weeks of on-line learning from their home communities, then 6 weeks of in-classroom training in Sioux lookout followed by 2 weeks of certificate training and ending with 8 weeks of job placement. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be designated as a Level 1 Carpenter Apprentice in Ontario. The program is scheduled to be completed March 26, 2010.

C of Q Exam Preparation Program (Carpentry)


The Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board under the Centre for Aboriginal Apprenticeship Research (CAAR) Project is again seeking interested applicants to participate in its C of Q Exam Preparation Program (Carpentry)


The Centre for Aboriginal Apprenticeship Research Project is a three year pilot project to enable aboriginal candidates to receive trade certification. This project started in April 2007 and will end March 31, 2010. This will be the final fiscal year this project will be delivered.

Hydro One Aboriginal Workforce Development Initiative Apprentice Hired!

Joshua Gardner, a member of the Eagle Lake First Nation situated 20 km south west of Dryden, Ontario. Joshua started work on June 1, 2009 as a Construction and Maintenance Electrician Apprentice in Thunder Bay for Hydro One. Joshua completed a pre- apprenticeship electrician course through Confederation College in 2008. He is very excited about his job as a C & M Electrician Apprentice and he is committed 100 percent to his job. Joshua's message is "If I can return back to college and then get a job than so can you.

SLAAMB AGM & Grand Opening of HRSDC Service Canada Office!

SLAAMB's Annual General Meeting will take place on June 24-26, 2009 at the new SLAAMB office on 80 Front St. and the Grand Opening of the new HRSDC Service Canada's Full Service Outreach Offices will be on Wednesday June 24/09 at approximately 10:30AM.  To officially open the new offices will be Mr. Greg Rickford, MP Kenora Riding and Ms. Suzanne Dupont, Service Canada, Kenora Area Director.
